I am the author, editor, and co-editor of several influential film-related books as well as writing many articles in international screen studies journals.
I taught film, television, and literature topics at various universities in England, Scotland, the USA, and Spain. My main specializations include American cinema history, film noir, narrative theory, and screen comedy.
I was a vocalist in various bands from the early 1980s on, focusing more recently on music and video production
I was born in Tower Hamlets, London, one of five children in a working-class immigrant family (my father was a Polish refugee and Siberian gulag survivor, my mother the daughter of a dockworker).
For the past four decades I've pursued a career in the middle-class protectorate of university culture. Having left that world, I am now free to explore my personal and professional interests.
This site is devoted to topics in film and other popular media, as well as to my ongoing side-hustle as a musician.
The blog will feature information about previous and forthcoming publications, along with thoughts about anything else that strikes my fancy.
